WORKFORCE INTELLIGENCE OUTCOME STUDY

BACKGROUND AND DESCRIPTION

  • Musculoskeletal injuries and lost time injuries represent the vast majority of workers compensation costs

  • Musculoskeletal injuries include sprains/strains to the lower back, neck, shoulders, elbow and knees

  • Chronic due to nature of work

  • Medical system is often ineffective, costly and time consuming

  • Does not address the underlying cause of the injury nor offer long term solutions

OPPORTUNITY

  • Results in return to work full duty and future injury prevention

  • Unique, evidence-based assessment by a nationally recognized musculoskeletal pain specialist

  • Understand the true postural casus of pain

  • Formulate corrective exercises needed to correct posture, strengthen and support areas involved in job activity, as well as alleviate pain and dysfunction

  • Leads to long term resolution of pain and injury-productive work hours, a more productive work life, a reduction in future incidents and/or duration of claim

COST SAVINGS

  • On average, employees enrolled in WIP returned to work in less time.

  • The average time from injury to MMI was 15 months, whereas the average time from WIP referral to MMI was 2.5 months

RETURN TO WORK SAVINGS

  • The predicted disability duration has been determined utilizing Official Disability Guidelines (ODG)*

  • Individuals with early enrollment in WIP returned to work 83% faster than ODG**

  • Average cost savings from early intervention was $23,000 per case

*The ODG publishes comprehensive evidence-based data for medical treatment costs as well as return to work guideines and indemnity estimates based on medical and outcome studies. They factor in the physical demand of the work and the specific type of injury and treatment.

**Twelve high risk individuals were separated into an early intervention group (0-2 months) and a delayed intervention group (4-20 months).

OVERALL CLAIM COST SAVINGS

  • Return to work full duty dramatically reduces long term disability and settlement costs

  • Direct medical cost savings were also calculated utilizing ODG

  • Cost savings with early intervention was $64,680 vs $114,837 for delayed intervention.

  • Functional Capacity Evaluations were avoided in all 12 cases.

WIP RETURN TO WORK OUTCOMES

  • Prior to injury, all clients worked in industries with moderate to heavy physical demands.

  • The average OGD risk score was 89.7 which is extreme risk***

***ODG extreme risk is determined by age, comorbidities, physical demands of the job, litigation, jurisdiction, medical costs, treatments to date and future medical treatments.

  • At the time of WIP referral, 7 clients were working modified duty and 5 clients were not working at all.

  • Following completion of WIP, all 12 clients returned to work full duty
